BIOGRAFEMA

University Career Giuseppe Maurizio Campo was born in Novara di Sicilia (Messina), Italy, on september the 16th 1963. After the state secondary school he registered at the University of Messina, Italy, in the Faculty of Sciences. In march 1987 he graduated in Biological Sciences. From 1987 to 1998 he attended post-doctoral followship at the Institute of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, University of Messina, Italy. During the years 1987 and 1988 he worked as scientific consultant of the “Institute of International Pharmacobiological Researches” (IRFI) in of a cooperation project between IRFI and the Institute of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, University of Messina, Italy, for the research and development of new antishock drugs. In the years 1989-1991 he worked as scientific consultant of FIDIA Research Laboratories in a cooperation project between FIDIA and the Institute of Pharmacology for the study of new active molecules in the cardiovascular system. In 1992 he worked as scientific consultant of the Consortium CIFA-GESCO in order to study new drugs with specific activity against infectious agents in septic shock. In October 1992 he obtained the specialization degree in “Biochemistry and Clinical Chemistry”, analytical course, at the Institute of Biochemical Sciences, School of Medicine, University of Messina, Italy. In the beginning of 1993 he won a post-doctoral followship of the National Council of Research (CNR) for a stage at the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences and Technology at Karolinska Institute, Huddinge University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, working in a project for the research and development of new analytical methods applied to a drugs with specific activity in the CNS. In 1994 he won the selection for pH.D. based on “Experimental Medicine” at the Institute of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, University of Messina. In 1998 he obtained the pH.D degree by discussing the topic “Free radical in medicine: study of the lipid peroxidation during experimental myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury; evaluation of new antioxidant compounds”. At the end of 1998 he won a selection for a Aggregate Professor position at the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Morphofunctional Imaging. From December 16th, 1998 he is Aggregate Professor of Biochemistry and Medical Chemistry in the Medical Faculty of the University of Messina. After the graduation in 1987, Dr Campo began his scientific research at the Institute of Pharmacology, School of Medicine, University of Messina. He worked with a research group that was studying some experimental models of cerebral ischemia/reperfusion injury in the gerbil. In addition he also started to work in the biochemistry and radioimmunoassay laboratories where he learned several chromatographic and radioimmunological methods in order to evaluate neurotransmitters and others chemical mediators in biological liquids and tissues. During this period he also studied the role played by these neurotransmitters in the central regulation of the cardiovascular system after the treatment with drugs increasing the cerebral levels of these neurotransmitters. In 1989 Dr. Campo began to study the physiopathological mechanisms of shock and the possibility of the research and development of new therapeutic approaches. Of particular interest are also the studies on the role played by PAF, TNF-alpha and Prostanoides in the pathogenesis of acute ischemic states. In 1993 Dr. Campo won a post-doctoral fellowship of the CNR and he collaborated with a research group of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology, directed by Prof. F. Sjoqvist, at Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences and Technology at Karolinska Institute of Stockholm where he spent a very advantageous stage by studying the genetic polymorphism of some CNS drugs, by evaluating their urinary and plasma levels with HPLC. In 1994 Dr. Campo has also started to study the physiopathological role played by free radicals and by endogenous antioxidants during experimental myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury. Particularly the detrimental role played by leukocytes, cytokynes and the consequent lipid peroxidation after the ischemic damage in the rat. Of interest are some experiments in which were used some new synthetic analogues of Vitamin E. Starting from 1998 Dr. Campo had a research position at the Department of Biochemical, Physiological and Nutritional Sciences where he carried out his scientific researches focusing on the physiopathological study of the glycosaminoglycans into the more common human pathologies and in pathological experimental models in animals. He has been set up several pathological experimental models in rodents such as acute cirrhosis, rheumatoid arthritis, hepatic fibrosis and pancreatitis in order to study and to evaluate the effective role of glycosaminoglycans with the aim to apply these studies in humans. He also assessed the direct action of the glycosaminoglycans of transcription factors such as NF-kB and initiators of apoptosis such as caspases. Other research has been conducted on the increased synthesis of hyaluronic acid, by fibroblast in culture medium after treatment with certain growth factors and cytokines, and the synergic action exerted by oxidative stress. Several experiments to assess the different action of hyaluronic acid, according to its molecular weight, of normal cells or treated with pro-inflammatory agents, and modulating its activity on receptors such as CD44 and TLRs. With particular interest is currently being investigated the role of glycosaminoglycans, Hyaluronic acid especially, in experimental arthritis, both in vivo and in vitro together with all the mediators related to the inflammatory process. He still belongs to the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine, SIR-Medicine, University of Messina. In June 2014 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification obtaining the double qualification, being eligible as Associate Professor S.S.D. BIO/10 (Biochemistry) and Full Professor of S.S.D. BIO/10 (Biochemistry). In October 2016 he was the winner of the evaluation procedure for the call in the role of Associate Professor of Biochemistry, and in the December 2019 obtained a position for Full Professor of General Biochemistry. He currently also serves as the Delegate for Guidance for the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine. It is part of the Joint Commission of the same Department. He is a member of the AQ Commission and Re-examination of the Degree Course in Nursing. He is part of the Teaching Committee of the Doctorate in Veterinary Sciences.
