Further information for the items listed above
The bold activities are mandatory courses common to all curricula for a total of 28 ECTS; the other courses can be chosen individually by each doctoral student, who must reach a minimum number of 53 ECTS (including 28 ECTS from mandatory courses) during the first year of the doctoral program. This choice will be supported by the PhD faculty, based on the student's knowledge and attitudes, in January 2021. This process will allow the student to fill in any gaps and develop training in line with his/her research interests. Research training is only offered on-site, even though courses may also be delivered by online classes.
Method of choosing the subject of the thesis
The student will choose his/her tutor starting from April 2021. The thesis’ topics will be discussed with the tutor and a research project drawn up to be presented to the PhD faculty at the end of the academic year.
Assessment procedures for admission to the following year
Admission to the following year will be based on the assessments of the teachers of the courses attended by the PhD students and on the basis of the validity of the contents of a research project to be conducted in the following two years. Research projects will be presented in a public seminar at the end of the first year.
Second year activities
Description | CFU | SSD | Contacts hour |
Seminars | 20 |
Further information for the items listed above
The seminars are organized with the members of the PhD faculty or other researchers and professional workers.
Thesis preparation methods
In the second year, students will begin to carry out their thesis project, with the possibility to spend visiting periods and attend winter and summer schools to deepen their training on more specific subjects, related to their research interests. Furthermore, PhD students will be invited to submit their scientific works to both national and international conferences.
Assessment procedures for the subsequent annual admission
In September 2022, each student will present in a public seminar his/her research work carried out during the academic year. The evaluation of the seminar by the PhD faculty and the tutor’ evaluation will represent the criterion for evaluating admission to the third year.
Third year activities
Description | CFU | SSD | Contacts hour |
Seminars | 10 |
Further information for the items listed above
The seminars are organized with the members of the PhD faculty or other researchers and professional workers.
Admission procedure for the final exam
In June-July 2023, each student will present his/her research work carried out during the three years of the doctoral program. The evaluation by the PhD faculty, in addition to the tutor's judgment on the activity carried out, will be the criteria for assessing admission to the final exam. To this end, the PhD faculty will be assisted by the independent evaluations of two referees from outside the PhD faculty and will decide whether to immediately admit the student to the final exam or whether to assign an additional period to complete the thesis up to a maximum of six months.
Procedure for the final exam
The final exam for the achievement of the qualification consists of a public discussion, having as its theme the PhD thesis, previously examined and evaluated by an ad-hoc PhD committee. At the end of the public discussion, the PhD committee approves or rejects the thesis, with a motivated written collegial judgment. The PhD committee assigns an overall judgment on the thesis and on the path of the PhD student, choosing from the following assessments: 'sufficient', 'good', 'excellent'. The Commission has the power to award cum laude distinction in the presence of results of particular scientific importance. In the presence of a “rejection” assessment, the PhD student will no longer have the possibility to discuss his/her thesis later.
