Principali campi di lavoro

Gamma-ray Bursts (GRBs): “central engine”, Fisica dell’emissione delle prime fasi e specialmente delle fasi successive, struttura e geometria dei getti, connessione tra GRBs e supernovae, uso di queste sorgenti per studiare, dal punto di vista cosmologico, l’ambiente locale e le galassie ospiti dei GRBs.

Ricerca di controparti elettromagnetiche di sorgenti compatte di onde gravitazionali (GWs). Fondatore e capo del gruppo “Follow-up of GW Transients from Anatolia”, con astronomi Turchi.

Capacita’ tecnico-scientifiche

Riduzione di dati e fotometria: BeppoSAX Medium Energy e Low Energy Concentrator Spectrometers (MECS, LECS), Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) e UV/Optical Telescope.

Utente proficient degli Ftools (inclusi specifici tools della missione Swift), compreso Xspec.

Compiti di osservazione in “real time” ed a successive riprese di GRBs e sorgenti compatte di GWs.

Proficiente in Fortran F77 e Basic. Conoscenza di lavoro di IDL e Python.

2019-2022 PI of the 3-year TÜBITAK Project 119F073 “Understanding the multi-messenger physics of neutron star mergers and gamma-ray bursts”. Fondi per circa 430000 Lire Turche (approssimativamente 60,000 euro all’epoca), per assumere personale, acquisire macchinario, viaggi e pubblicazioni. "PI-ship" interrotta dal 2021 per fuoriuscita dalla Turchia, continua la consulenza "esterna".

2007-2012 Rolling Grant dal UK Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (fondi per 5 years di salario e ricerca).

2018 – 2022 Principal Investigator del Progetto “Study of GRB Physics with the ESA next flagship mission ATHENA” alla Istanbul University, in collaborazione con l’Universita di Amsterdam,
 con incluse spese per hardware, viaggio e pubblicazione. Termina la "PI"-ship formale causa fuoriuscita dalla Turchia, continua la "direzione esterna". Relazione finale consegnata a gennaio 2022.

    Main Research Interests

    GRBs: central engine, physics of early and in particular of late emission, jet structure and geometry, GRBs-supernovae associations, use of these sources as cosmological probes of the local environments and host galaxies.

    Chasing electromagnetic counterparts of Gravitational Wave (GWs) compact sources. Founder and head of the “Follow-up of GW Transients from Anatolia” group, involving Turkish astronomers.


    Technical Expertise

    Reduction of data and photometry: BeppoSAX Medium Energy and Low Energy Concentrator Spectrometers (MECS, LECS), Swift X-ray Telescope (XRT) and UV/Optical Telescope.

    Proficient user of Ftools (including specific Swift mission tools), including Xspec.

    Real time mission duties and secondary follow-up observations of GRBs and GW compact sources.

    Proficient in Fortran F77 and Basic. Working knowledge of IDL and Python.

    2019-2022 PI of the 3-year TÜBITAK Project 119F073 “Understanding the multi-messenger physics of neutron star mergers and gamma-ray bursts”. Funding of about 430000 Turkish Liras (about 60000 euros at the time), to hire personnel, buy hardware, travel and publication. "PI-ship" interrupted in 2021 because of leaving Turkey, "external" support continues.

    2007 Rolling Grant dal UK Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council (worth 5 years of salary and research).

    2018 - 2021  PI of the project “Study of GRB Physics with the ESA next flagship mission Athena", collaboration between researchers of IU and A. Pannekoek Institute, U. of Amsterdam. Funding for hardware, 2-week travel expenses to one person to the Pannekoek, publication. "PI-ship" interrupted when leaving Turkey, "external direction continues. Final report submitted in January 2022.
