ATTIVITÁ SCIENTIFICA
L’attività scientifica della Dr. Anna Irto è principalmente orientata alla determinazione di parametri termodinamici di protonazione, idrolisi e formazione di complessi in soluzione acquosa, con particolare riferimento alla speciazione di leganti di differente natura, come molecole organiche ed inorganiche a basso, medio ed alto peso molecolare, e cationi metallici ed organometallici di interesse ambientale e biologico. Le esperienze di ricerca all’estero hanno consentito alla Dr. Anna Irto di acquisire una buona esperienza nel campo della progettazione, sintesi, purificazione e caratterizzazione mediante spettroscopia 1H e 13C NMR e spettrometria ESI-MS di nuovi potenziali agenti chelanti come i 3-idrossi-4-piridinoni e i metallofori amminochelina, azotochelina e protochelina, potenzialmente utilizzabili per la rimozione di metalli da matrici ambientali e biologiche. Parallelamente a questo tipo di studi, la sua attività scientifica è anche rivolta alla sintesi, la caratterizzazione e la valutazione dell’efficacia di nuovi materiali ecosostenibili per la conservazione di materiali lapidei di interesse storico-artistico e per potenziali applicazioni ambientali, in collaborazione con gruppo di ricerca Ibea del Departamento de Química Analítica, Universidad del País Vasco (EHU/UPV), Bilbao (Spagna). La Dr. Anna Irto ha recentemente rivolto la sua attenzione verso l’archeometria, partecipando alle indagini condotte su una serie di tessere provenienti da mosaici rinvenuti nel sito archeologico di Villa San Pancrazio a Taormina, che comprende due Domus Romane di età Imperiale, allo scopo di fornire un supporto analitico agli studi archeologici, per ottenere eventuali informazioni sulle materie prime impiegate per la realizzazione delle tessere o sulla relativa tecnologia di produzione. La Dr. Anna Irto ha inoltre iniziato a dedicarsi alla progettazione e allo sviluppo di metodi analitici per la determinazione e quantificazione di residui organici di natura lipidica, come acidi grassi intatti ed esteri metilici di acidi grassi, provenienti da cibi, balsami e profumi rinvenuti in anfore, vasi, brocche ed unguentari di rilevanza archeologica risalenti alla tarda età imperiale. Negli ultimi mesi, si sta inoltre occupando del recupero, del riuso e della valorizzazione di scarti di lavorazione del bergamotto per produrre nuovi materiali per la possibile sequestrazione di inquinanti da matrici ambientali. L’attività di ricerca della Dr. Anna Irto è documentata da 25 articoli pubblicati su riviste ISI a diffusione internazionale, n. 1 articolo sulla rivista della Società Chimica Italiana “La Chimica e l’industria online” e 36 contributi a congressi nazionali ed internazionali, , tra cui una lecture su invito di 30 minuti in lingua inglese come riconoscimento per il conseguimento “Fernando Pulidori Prize” durante l’International Symposium on Metal Complexes 2019 (ISMEC 2019).

    SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY
    The scientific activity of Dr. Anna Irto is mainly focused on the determination of thermodynamic parameters of protonation, hydrolysis and metal-ligand complex formation in aqueous solution, with particular interest to the speciation of ligands with different nature, such as organic and inorganic molecules with low, medium and high molecular weight, and metal and organometal cations of environmental and biological interest. Research experiences abroad allowed Dr. Anna Irto to acquire a good experience in the field of design, synthesis, purification and characterization by 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy and ESI-MS spectrometry of new potential chelating agents such as 3-hydroxy -4-pyridinones and metallophores, potentially exploitable for the removal of metals from environmental and biological matrices. Furthermore, her scientific activity is also aimed to the synthesis, characterization and evaluation of new ecofriendly materials for the conservation of stone of historical-artistic interest and for potential environmental applications, in collaboration with a group Ibea Research Department of the Departamento de Química Analítica, Universidad del País Vasco (EHU/UPV), Bilbao (Spain). She has also focused her attention to archaeometry, participating to the investigations performed on a group of tesserae coming from mosaics found in the archaeological site of Villa San Pancrazio in Taormina, which includes two Roman Domus from the Imperial age, for the purpose to provide an analytical support to archaeological studies, to obtain information on the raw materials used to perform the tesserae and on the production technology. Dr. Anna Irto has also started to work for the development of analytical methods for the determination and quantification of organic residues of lipidic nature, such as intact or free fatty acids and their methyl esters, coming from foods, balms and perfumes found in amphorae, vases, jugs and ointments of archaeological relevance dating to the Late Imperial Age. In the last months, she is also working for recovery, reuse and enhancement of manufacturing wastes from bergamot fruit to produce new materials for the possible sensing and sequestration of pollutants from environmental matrices.
    The research activity of Dr. Anna Irto is documented by n. 24 articles published in international ISI journals, n. 1 paper in the journal of the Italian Chemical Society "La Chimica e L’Industria" and 36 contributions to national and international congresses, including an invited lecture of 30 minutes in English language as recognition of the "Fernando Pulidori Prize" achievement, during the International Symposium on Metal Complexes 2019 (ISMEC 2019).
