Obiettivi Formativi
Learning Goals
The Social Statistics provides, as part of a process of analysis organized according to the principles of social research methodology, quantitative methods to describe and explain social phenomena. The course is aimed at understanding the meaning of operations on the reasons for use of statistical tools and the interpretation of results, placing the statistical analysis in an ideal location for social research. The main techniques of social research will be presented to the student, with attention to both quantitative and qualitative approach. The purpose of the course is to provide the knowledge necessary to make an empirical research and be able to critically evaluate a research report. The student will explore the various issues related methodological and statistical study of observational phenomena in the social field and develop knowledge of social research methodology in reference to the creation of adequate tools for the detection of opinion polls, using the training samples and considering the related problems.Metodi didattici
Teaching Methods
The course will be structured through lessons of lectures, exercises and possible participation in seminars.Prerequisiti
Conoscenza generica della matematica di base.Prerequisites
General knowledge of basic mathematics.Verifiche dell'apprendimento
Assessment
Written and oral exam on the topics covered in the books in the program, on the dates shown on the exam session calendar.
Individuare quali analisi compiere sui dati e come interpretare i risultati. Course Syllabus
Introduce specific research techniques based on the quantitative approach. Outline the transition from theory to empirical research, examining the experiment, the sample survey and the technique of scales, to close with a reminder of the valuable contribution that official statistical sources can provide to social research. Describe the statistical treatment of data collected with quantitative research techniques and translated the theory into empirical facts and transformed the concepts into variables, study these variables and their relationships through data analysis. Approaching the statistical survey as a fundamental research method in the social sciences. Acquire the design skills of an investigation that has scientific validity. Identify which analyses to perform on the data and how to interpret the results. Illustrate in a simple and operational way how to carry out a statistical survey, highlighting the aspects of data validity and quality. Know the continuous data collection process of statistical information performed on a representative sample. Specify the difference between probabilistic and non- probabilistic sampling. Present the latest techniques for carrying out computer-assisted investigations (by telephone and via the Internet). Finally, learn in a clear and rigorous way the ability to carry out an opinion poll, describing the main techniques and the correct scientific criteria of each phase.Testi di riferimento: - Iezzi D.
