Obiettivi Formativi

Il corso, completando la prospettiva della formazione triennale, ha lo scopo di presentare esempi concreti di indagine specialistica di taglio comparativo. Obiettivo essenziale è l’acquisizione di una corretta prospettiva che sappia mettere in dialogo la tradizione letteraria italiana con quella europea, riconoscendo le varie voci nella loro unicità, ma anche e soprattutto nel loro reciproco rapporto. Lo studente si abituerà a inquadrare fenomeni letterari di ampio respiro entro una cornice storica e culturale di adeguata complessità, sperimentando una diretta e personale esperienza delle metodiche di ricerca

Learning Goals

The course, completing the perspective of the three-year training, aims to present concrete examples of a comparative specialist survey. The essential objective is the acquisition of a correct perspective that can put the Italian literary tradition in dialogue with the European one, recognizing the various voices in their uniqueness, but also and above all in their mutual relationship. The student will become accustomed to framing literary phenomena of wide scope within a historical and cultural framework of adequate complexity, experiencing a direct and personal experience of research methods

Verifiche dell'apprendimento

La verifica, duplice, prevede: a) Una relazione scritta di almeno 15.000 caratteri (= cinque cartelle dattiloscritte) su un punto del programma, che gli studenti frequentanti presenteranno in itinere, e gli studenti non frequentanti invieranno almeno dieci giorni prima della prova d’esame a cdona@unime.it. L’argomento della relazione verrà concordato con il docente. b) Un colloquio orale sugli argomenti trattati nelle lezioni e nei testi in programma, nonché sulla relazione scritta presentata dallo studente. Detto colloquio avverrà nelle date riportate sul calendario degli appelli degli esami

Assessment

The verification is twofold, as it involves: (a) A written report of at least 15,000 characters (= five typed pages) on one of the syllabus' themes. Attending students will submit their paper in itinere, i. e. during the lesson’s period, non-attending students will send it at least ten days before the examination to cdona@unime.it. The topic of the paper will be agreed with the professor. (b) An oral interview on the topics covered in the lectures and program texts, and on the student's written report. Said interview will take place on the dates listed on the exams calendar. The course, of monographic type, is entitled The Secret of the Serpent and aims to illustrate some of the most important literary and iconographic themes related to the ophidian figure in all its forms (snakes proper, dragons, partially serpentine beings). Based on a textual and iconographic corpus that stretches from the Mesopotamian tradition to the Middle Ages, the course will bring into focus several first-rate literary archetypes found in both the West and the East, and in both the learned and popular traditions. It will mainly cover the genres of myth, heroic tale and fairytale. The investigation, with a resolutely comparative focus, will be characterized above all by examining evidence from very different sources in parallel, in order to highlight their common plot, and by the constant comparison of literary texts and iconic documents, in the conviction that literary history, philology and iconology must necessarily go hand in hand in the reconstruction of cultural phenomena.

Programma del Corso

Il corso è di tipo monografico, ha come titolo Il segreto del serpente, e intende illustrare alcuni dei più importanti temi letterari e iconografici connessi alla figura ofidica in tutte le sue forme (serpenti propriamente detti, draghi, esseri parzialmente serpentini). Basato su un corpus testuale e iconografico che si stende dalla tradizione mesopotamica al Medioevo, il corso permetterà di mettere a fuoco alcuni archetipi letterari di prima grandezza, che si trovano sia in Occidente che in Oriente, e tanto nella tradizione dotta che in quella popolare, e riguarderà in particolare i generi del mito, del racconto eroico e della fiaba. L’indagine, di taglio risolutamente comparatistico, sarà caratterizzata soprattutto dal fatto di esaminare in parallelo testimonianze di provenienza molto diversa, al fine di mettere in luce la loro trama comune, e dal confronto costante fra testi letterari e documenti iconici, nella convinzione che storia letteraria, filologia e iconologia debbano necessariamente procedere di pari passo nella ricostruzione dei fenomeni culturali.
