Obiettivi Formativi

Gli studenti e le studentesse acquisiranno le nozioni di base utili per attivare una riflessione metapragmatica sulla linguistica inglese e, in particolare, svilupperà una conoscenza della lingua al micro-livello della parola, nelle sue componenti fonetiche, morfologiche e lessico-grammaticali. Acquisiranno inoltre conoscenze relative al processo di standardizzazione della lingua inglese, alle sue varietà diatopiche, sia native che non native, e al doppio ruolo dell’inglese come lingua locale e globale. Gli studenti e le studentesse saranno in grado di usare le risorse linguistiche in una varietà di contesti comunicativi riconducibili, ma non coincidenti o limitati, al livello B1 del Quadro Comune Europeo di Riferimento per la Conoscenza delle Lingue (QCER).

Learning Goals

Students will acquire those basic notions useful to encourage a metapragmatic awareness of English linguistics, and, in particular, they will acquire a knowledge at the micro-level of the word, of its phonetic, morphological and lexico-grammatical components. Students will also be introduced to the process of standardization of the English language, while becoming aware of the main varieties of English, both native and non-native, and its double role as a local and global language. Students will be able to use their language skills in a variety of contexts corresponding, but not overlapping with, or limited to, the B1 level of the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR).

Metodi didattici

Il corso segue un approccio misto, integrando lezioni frontali, seminari e presentazioni. In aula verrà dato ampio spazio alla partecipazione attiva delle studentesse e degli studenti, tramite dibattiti di classe e presentazioni multimediali da parte sia delle docenti che delle studentesse e degli studenti. Le esercitazioni di lingua inglese si concentrano sulle abilità ricettive (comprensione scritta e orale) e produttive (produzione scritta e orale). Anche le esercitazioni seguiranno un approccio misto e saranno tenute da personale madrelingua specializzato.

Teaching Methods

The course includes face-to-face classes and seminars. In face-to-face classes, class participation is encouraged. Lectures are the main component of the course, but class debates are also amply used to boost interactivity and dialogue among students. Presentations will be used by both teacher and students. Language classes are organized to help develop receptive skills (oral and written comprehension) and productive skills (oral and written production). Language practice will follow a blended approach as well. All lessons and activities are in English.

Verifiche dell'apprendimento

L’esame prevede una prova parziale propedeutica all’orale di livello B1 e un colloquio orale sui temi affrontati nel corso nelle date riportate sul calendario degli appelli degli esami. La prova scritta comprende una parte di grammatica, una prova di ascolto, una comprensione del testo e una produzione scritta. La prova scritta propedeutica potrà anche essere erogata tramite una piattaforma digitale. La prova parziale scritta viene valutata con un giudizio (insufficiente, sufficiente, discreto, buono, distinto, ottimo) non con un voto. Durante il corso sono previste delle prove in itinere. Tutte le verifiche e gli esami si svolgeranno in lingua inglese.

Assessment

A written test assessing B1 language skills and an oral exam on the course topics. The written test is compulsory and must be passed to sit for the oral exam. The test includes one listening comprehension task, a reading comprehension task, a written production. The test may be administered by means on a digital online platform. It is evaluated as fail, pass, fair, good, very good and excellent. Mid-term assignments will be also planned during the course. All assessment tasks are in English.

Programma del Corso

Il corso è diviso in tre moduli. Il primo modulo si concentra sullo studio diacronico della lingua inglese, in particolare su aspetti storici, la definizione di Standard e lo status dell’inglese come lingua ‘globale’. Il secondo modulo esaminerà i suoni della lingua inglese presentando aspetti fonetici e fonologici segmentali di base. Il terzo modulo permette agli studenti di acquisire familiarità con le strutture morfologiche della lingua come word classes, content words, e function words per poi analizzare le categorie e classi del discorso (parts of speech). Attraverso l’analisi di testi di varia natura, verranno indagate le principali modalità di cambiamento e innovazione lessicale, delineando le aree semantiche maggiormente investite da tali cambiamenti. Si analizzeranno ed approfondiranno inoltre le seguenti categorie grammaticali del livello B1: definite and indefinite articles, adjectives (possessive, demonstrative, comparative and superlative forms), adverbs (regular and irregular forms), adverbs of frequency, conjunctions, conditional (type 0, 1 and 2), direct and indirect speech, interrogative forms, nouns (countable and uncountable, abstract, compound), pronouns (personal, impersonal, demonstrative, quantitative, indefinite, relative), prepositions (place, time, instrument), main clause, coordinative and subordinate clause (following sure and certain, know, think, believe, hope, say and tell, if, when, where and because), modal verbs, present and past simple, present and past continuous, present and past perfect simple, future, gerunds, passive forms, infinitives (with and without to) after verbs and prepositions, short questions and answers, imperatives, so/nor with auxiliaries, most common phrasal verbs with prepositions.

Course Syllabus

The course is divided into three modules. The first module provides an introduction to the English language, particularly its standardization process, to examine changes from a political and historical perspective. The second module will introduce students to the study of English phonetics and phonology. The third module focuses on English morphological structures such as word classes, content words, functions words and parts of speech. The module will also investigate the main word formation processes and lexical changes. The following B1 grammar topics will be investigated: definite and indefinite articles, adjectives (possessive, demonstrative, comparative and superlative forms), adverbs (regular and irregular forms), adverbs of frequency, conjunctions, conditional (type 0, 1 and 2), direct and indirect speech, interrogative forms, nouns (countable and uncountable, abstract, compound), pronouns (personal, impersonal, demonstrative, quantitative, indefinite, relative), prepositions (place, time, instrument), main clause, coordinative and subordinate clause (following sure and certain, know, think, believe, hope, say and tell, if, when, where and because), modal verbs, present and past simple, present and past continuous, present perfect (simple and continuous), past perfect simple, future, gerunds, passive forms, infinitives (with and without to) after verbs and prepositions, short questions and answers, imperatives, so/nor with auxiliaries, most common phrasal verbs with prepositions.
