Esame orale. Gli studenti e le studentesse sono tenuti a presentare almeno un autore/argomento in lingua inglese. Oltre alla conoscenza degli argomenti in programma, saranno valutate le capacità di analisi critica e personale dei testi e la proprietà di linguaggio.Assessment
Oral exam. Students are required to discuss at least one author/topic in English. In addition to the knowledge of the topics in the syllabus, the capacity of critically and personally analyzing the texts and the property of language will be evaluated.Programma del Corso
Il corso intende fornire agli studenti le conoscenze e gli strumenti metodologici necessari per la lettura, la contestualizzazione e la comprensione critica dei testi e delle poetiche del periodo compreso tra l’origine della colonizzazione europea del continente nord-americano e l’inizio del XX secolo negli Stati Uniti. Durante il corso, gli studenti e le studentesse devono studiare e comprendere le caratteristiche formali e tematiche, le problematiche storiche e culturali e le riflessioni estetiche relative all’attività letteraria nel periodo studiato. Gli aspetti politico-sociali e la storia culturale e letteraria saranno discussi attraverso la lettura attenta e critica di una serie di testi rappresentativi del periodo compreso. Il corso combinerà lezioni frontali, analisi testuali e discussione in classe. Tutti i testi verranno letti in inglese. Agli studenti e alle studentesse è richiesto di leggere regolarmente i testi assegnati e partecipare attivamente alla discussione in classe.Course Syllabus
This course intends to provide students with the necessary set of knowledge and methodologies for the reading, contextualization and critical understanding of the texts and poetics produced in the United States of America between the beginnings of the European colonization of the North-American continent and the beginning of the XX century. In this course, students will study and understand formal and thematic features, historical and cultural issues, and the aesthetic considerations related to the literary activity of the period under study. Political-social, as well as cultural and literary aspects will be discussed through a close reading of a number of texts which are representative of the period under study. Lessons will combine lectures, textual analysis, and discussions in class. All the materials are to be read in English.
