Obiettivi Formativi

Learning Goals

The course aims to provide students with the basic knowledge of differential and integral calculus for the real functions of a real variable, series theory and basic notions on ordinary differential equations and their applications to solving problems based on mathematical models. We will insist on understanding and assimilating the definitions and the main results, rather than on the proofs (some of which, moreover, will be carried out in detail). Wide space will be given to examples and exercises. At the end of the course, students should be able to perform, correctly and without hesitation, elementary calculations concerning limits, derivatives, integrals, series, possess the main theoretical notions and will need to know how to apply the concepts learned to the resolution of various types of problems, including applications, and to identify the most appropriate approach to solving the proposed problems. They will have to know how to argue the choices made and be able to identify the appropriate rules to apply to the resolution of new problems, similar to those discussed in class. Students must be able to communicate efficiently and to proof logical - argumentative and summary skills. Students will be able to discuss some scientific topics by building simple mathematical models applied to engineering. To acquire the ability to independently identify the tools and data sources needed for the analysis, understanding and resolution of problems related the course, also through the integration of the acquired knowledge with appropriate bibliographic investigations such as to allow a critical comparison between the different possible solutions. To acquire the ability to speak with technical language appropriate to the discipline. To acquire an adequate individual study-method to allow the deepening of knowledge and to face further advanced or sectoral topics.

Metodi didattici

Teaching Methods

The course takes place through lectures in the classroom (36 hours) and exercises given by the teacher (36 hours) with application with applications to typical engineering problems. All activities are carried out with the support of lecture slides.

Prerequisiti

Prerequisites

Basic topics of elementary mathematics, provided by high schools.

Verifiche dell'apprendimento

Assessment

The exam consists of a written test and an oral test. In the written test the student must solve some exercises, with the aim of verifying that they have acquired and know how to use the tools provided during the course. The topics and the level of the exercises correspond to the program delivered and to the reference texts indicated. The time allotted for the written test is two hours. The written test is passed if the average is equal to 16/30. Passing the written test allows you to take the oral exam, which consists of a discussion on the written test and questions that tend to ascertain the theoretical knowledge of the course contents, the acquisition of methodological rigor and the ability to reason about topics related to the course. During the course, there will be two ongoing tests related to the topics covered during the course and are held respectively in the periods of November and January on dates that are agreed during the lessons with the students. Each test is assigned a score out of thirty. Students who achieve a score equal to or greater than 16/30 in each ongoing tests will be able to take the oral exam in the sessions established by the calendar. Students who do not participate in the ongoing tests can take the written test during the sessions scheduled for in the exam calendar of the Engineering Department. The oral exam focuses on the topics covered during the course and the evaluation takes into account the knowledge acquired, the ability to apply the concepts studied and exposure with scientific language. The exam is considered passed if the average score between the written and oral part is equal to or greater than 18/30.
