Obiettivi Formativi
Attraverso l’analisi linguistica di testi divaria natura (articoli di quotidiani, manifesti politici, siti web, filmetc.) gli studenti e le studentesse acquisiranno conoscenze su aspetti pertinenti la cultura irlandese (anche nel suo travagliato rapporto con il Regno Unito) e saranno in grado di discuterli in inglese in una prospettiva interdisciplinare tipica degli Irish Studies diffusi in diverse nazioni del mondo. L’obiettivo del corso è quello di stimolare la discussione su aspetti problematici della cultura irlandese (storici, politicie culturali) con particolare riferimento alruolo che la lingua inglese nella sua varietà di Irish English riveste in tale contesto. Saranno inoltre proposte riflessioni funzionali all’applicazione delle competenze acquisite in ambito didattico.Learning Goals
Students will acquire notions on specific aspects of Irish culture and will be able to discuss and comment them in English in an interdisciplinary perspective. Particular emphasis will be placed on the text analysisof different text types (newspaper articles, pamphlets, websites, films etc.).The aim of the course is to stimulate discussion on problematic aspects of Irish culture(history, politicsand culture)with particular reference to the role that Irish English plays in this context. The course is designed to equip students with the theoretical and practical tools they need to analyse the Irish context through texts with the aim of encouraging the development of their skills in critically reflecting on the process of text production and reception also in terms of ELT (English Language Teaching).Metodi didattici
Il corso è costituito da lezioni frontali svolte in lingua inglese dando però ampio rilievo alla partecipazione attiva tramite dibattiti di classe e presentazioni multimediali da parte sia del docente che degli studenti che delle studentesse. Si prevede inoltre l'utilizzo delle risorse disponibili in rete e la proiezione di file video e audio. Teaching Methods

L’esame prevede un colloquio orale sulle competenze linguistiche e comunicative acquisite e sui contenuti tematici proposti durante il corso nelle date riportate sul calendario degli appelli degli esami. Durante il corso sono previste delle prove in itinere. Tutte le verifiche e gli esami si svolgeranno in lingua inglese.Assessment

Il corso è diviso in due moduli: 1) caratteristiche degli Irish Studies e 2) la lingua della partition. La prima parte del corso illustrerà le caratteristiche principali degli Irish Studies attraverso una campionatura di testi, generi e tipologie testuali significative nella storia irlandese. Si illustrerà in che modo l’Irlanda abbia rappresentato una sorta di laboratorio coloniale delle politiche inglesi e il ruolo giocato dalla varietà di Irish English in questo contesto. La seconda parte del corso sarà dedicata alle cause e conseguenze della partition. Si passeranno in rassegna le tappe che hanno portato alla creazione della Repubblica d’Irlanda concentrando l’attenzione sui troubles e sulla figura di Bobby Sands. La visione e il commento in lingua originale di film come The wind that shakes the barley (2006) e Michael Collins (1996) consentirà di acquisire parte del lessico necessario per muoversi in quest’ambito. The course is divided into two modules: 1) features of Irish Studies and 2) the language of partition. The first part of the course will portray the main features of Irish Studies through the analysis and the comment of different significant texts in Irish history. Ireland can be considered, linguistically and culturally, as a colonial laboratory for English politics and Irish English plays a pivotal role in this context. The second part of the course will focus on the causes and consequences of partition. Class lectures will outline the main steps which brought to the creation of the Republic of Ireland. The module invites a reflection on the troubles with specific reference to Bobby Sands. The course will also single out the relevant English lexicogrammar features through the analysis of movies such as The wind that shakes the barley (2006) and Michael Collins (1996). âââââââTesti di riferimento: Cambria M., Irish English.
