Obiettivi Formativi

Gli studenti apprenderanno gli strumenti utili ad approfondire una riflessione metapragmatica della linguistica inglese. In particolare, l’obiettivo principale del corso è migliorare le risorse interpretative e inferenziali della lingua inglese come sistema al livello della frase (clause), nelle sue componenti sintattiche e semantiche, unitamente agli elementi necessari per il riconoscimento e la corretta interpretazione della fonetica soprasegmentale. Gli studenti saranno in grado di usare le risorse linguistiche in una varietà di contesti comunicativi riconducibili, ma non coincidenti o limitati, al livello B2 del Quadro Comune Europeo di Riferimento per la Conoscenza delle Lingue (QCER)

Learning Goals

Students will learn the appropriate tools to elaborate on a metapragmatic reflection on English linguistics. In particular, the main aim of the course is to finetune the interpretative and inferential resources of the English language as a system at the meso-level (clause), in its syntactic components, and at the semantic level, together with the elements useful for the recognition and interpretation of suprasegmental phonetics (i.e. the prosodic features). Students will be able to use their language skills in a variety of communicative contexts corresponding, but not overlapping with or limited to, the B2 level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Metodi didattici

Il corso è costituito da lezioni frontali svolte in lingua inglese dando però ampio rilievo alla partecipazione attiva tramite dibattiti di classe e presentazioni multimediali da parte sia del docente che degli studenti che delle studentesse. Si prevede inoltre l'utilizzo delle risorse disponibili in rete e la proiezione di file video e audio. Le esercitazioni di lingua inglese mirano a rafforzare le competenze linguistiche acquisite durante il primo anno e si concentrano sulle abilità ricettive (comprensione scritta e orale) e produttive (produzione scritta e orale). Sia le lezioni che gli esami si svolgeranno in lingua inglese.

Teaching Methods

The course is based on a mixed learning approach which includes lectures, language classes and class discussions. All lessons and activities are in English. Language classes are organized to help develop skills acquired during the first-year English course, in particular receptive skills (oral and written comprehension) and productive skills (oral and written production). Language practice will follow a blended approach as well.

Raggiungimento degli obiettivi formativi previsti da Lingua inglese I nelle componenti metalinguistiche e comunicative (livello corrispondente a B1 del Quadro Comune Europeo di riferimento (QCER).

Achievement of the learning goals set by English language I in all its components at both metalinguistic and communicative level, with the latter corresponding to B1 within the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR).

Verifiche dell'apprendimento

È prevista una prova parziale scritta propedeutica all’orale che attesti il raggiungimento del livello B2 e un colloquio orale sulle competenze linguistiche e comunicative acquisite e sui contenuti tematici proposti durante il corso nelle date riportate sul calendario degli appelli degli esami. La prova scritta comprende una prova di conoscenze grammaticali, una comprensione del testo, una prova di ascolto e una produzione scritta. La prova propedeutica potrà anche essere erogata tramite una piattaforma digitale. La prova parziale scritta viene valutata con un giudizio (insufficiente, sufficiente, discreto, buono, distinto, ottimo) e non con un voto. Durante il corso sono previste delle prove in itinere.

Assessment

Assessment procedures: A written test assessing B2 language skills and an interview on the course’s topics. The written text is divided into four parts: language use, reading comprehension, written production and listening comprehension. The test may be administered by means on a digital online platform. The written test is evaluated with an evaluation (i.e. fail, pass, fair, good, very good, excellent) and not a mark. Mid-term assignments will be also planned during the course.

Programma del Corso

Attraverso un approfondimento teorico ed un’attività pratica, il corso mira a consolidare ed approfondire le basi teoriche della grammatica della lingua inglese in particolare a livello della frase, analizzata alla luce di alcuni scenari teorico-metodologici e prendendo in considerazione le relative implicazioni comunicativo-funzionali. Si approfondiranno i principali processi che si sviluppano durante la produzione di testi, evidenziando similitudini e differenze tra le varie risorse semiotiche ed incoraggiando una riflessione sugli elementi che contribuiscono alla creazione di testo, cotesto e contesto. Verranno analizzati fattori quali coesione e coerenza per decifrare intenzioni ed aspettative che sottendono i meccanismi di produzione e ricezione di testi statici (es. pagina stampata) e dinamici (es. siti web, film etc.) in lingua inglese. Si analizzeranno ed approfondiranno inoltre le seguenti categorie grammaticali del livello B2: habitual behaviour; frequency adverbs, used to and would; be used to, get used to, used to; indirect questions; gerunds and infinitive; comparisons; articles; so and such; past tenses and time expressions; obligation, necessity, permission; too and enough; defining and non-defining relative clauses; present perfect; future and time linkers; the passive; conditionals; so, neither and nor; the future and time linkers; modal verbs of speculation; reported speech and phrasal verbs.

Course Syllabus

The course will portray the English language from multiple perspectives providing students with the necessary grounding in linguistics to encourage independent investigation especially in sentence structure. Key concepts such as cohesion and coherence, grammar and grammaticality will be introduced. Students will be brought to the centrally important core texts with a focus on the production of language and on how texts are built and understood. Particular emphasis will be placed on the several semiotic resources used in the production of “static” (i.e. printed) and “dynamic” (i.e. websites, movies etc.) texts in English. The following B2 grammar contents will be investigated: habitual behaviour; frequency adverbs, used to and would; be used to, get used to, used to; indirect questions; gerunds and infinitive; comparisons; articles; so and such; past tenses and time expressions; obligation, necessity, permission; too and enough; defining and non-defining relative clauses; present perfect; future and time linkers; the passive; conditionals; so, neither and nor; the future and time linkers; modal verbs of speculation; reported speech and phrasal verbs.
