Obiettivi Formativi

L’obiettivo principale del corso è di consentire agli studenti di acquisire una competenza di base nella comprensione di termini e testi giuridici in lingua inglese. Il corso si articola in tre parti, di cui la prima serve a fornire le basi grammaticali della lingua inglese. La seconda parte del corso serve a delineare la storia del linguaggio giuridico inglese e le sue caratteristiche, compresa la terminologia di base. Si esamineranno alcune delle problematiche linguistiche insite nell’interpretazione e nella traduzione di testi prodotti non soltanto in un’altra lingua ma come espressione di un diverso sistema giuridico (ossia quello della Common Law). La terza parte del corso, invece, verte su tre settori fondamentali del diritto inglese, ossia Tort Law, Contract Law e Criminal Law. Dopo un’introduzione teorica generale dei tre settori, si procederà all’analisi e alla traduzione di testi giuridici inglesi attinenti ai settori stessi (sentenze, contratti ecc.).

Learning Goals

The main objective of the course is to enable students to acquire basic skills for understanding English legal terms and texts. The course is divided into three parts, the first of which aims to provide a knowledge of basic English grammar. The second part of the course outlines the history of English legal language and its features, including basic terminology. We will study some of the linguistic issues inherent in the interpretation and translation of texts produced not only in another language but as the expression of a different legal system (that is, the Common Law). The third part of the course deals with three fundamental areas of English law, namely Tort Law, Contract Law and Criminal Law. After a general theoretical introduction to the two sectors, we will move on to the analysis and translation of related English legal texts (judgments, contracts, etc.).

Tramite un colloquio e la traduzione di un testo giuridico, lo studente dovrà dimostrare di avere acquisito adeguate competenze e conoscenze linguistiche e giuridico-culturali sui vari argomenti trattati durante le lezioni.

Assessment

By means of oral discussion and the translation of a legal text, students must demonstrate that they have acquired adequate linguistic and legal knowledge regarding the various topics dealt with during the lessons.
